The project that fights for the freedom of the innocent in Argentina
Promoting reforms to the penal system, training future lawyers, and preventing judicial errors from recurring are the goals of the association working to free innocent people like Belén, the young woman who was sentenced to 8 years in prison after experiencing a spontaneous abortion in Argentina.
The organization "Innocence Project Argentina" was founded three years ago with the purpose of improving the investigation of criminal cases and the application of law, as well as correcting deficiencies that may arise in the work of judges and police, explained its founder, Celeste Braga, to EFE.
The group, which receives around 150 inquiries each year, was involved in Belén's case, where she was acquitted this week after being convicted of "aggravated homicide due to a relationship" in 2016 following an "incomplete spontaneous abortion without complications," according to her medical history.
